sewing & babies

i have been working on some new sewing projects!

i’m still working on the big queen-sized quilt for jared & i. this is the front:

i loooove that amazing scarlet red. it’s so cozy-looking. i bought a light lemon-y yellow to use with it, but i decided i liked the red alone, & adding yellow might be a little too ketchup & mustard. so i’m using the yellow as the dominant color in a baby quilt. for which i still have no other fabrics. & time is kind of ticking. the baby is due in january, which is when i was due with ramona, & we all know she put in an appearance in november. i’m really hoping this couple avoids that fate, but i’d like to get the quilt finished well before the due date anyway. especially for a winter baby. i know i want to use this amazing fabric featuring raccoons toasting marshmallows…okay, i just wasted a lot of time looking for a picture of it online. i don’t remember what the collection is called & none of the keywords i used worked. so just trust me. it’s cool. though i need to find more fabrics to go with the raccoon.

speaking of raccoons, i know what fabric i am going to use for the skirt i make next month:

it comes in some other colors too, so i think i might do a tiered skirt in at least two colorways. i’m also hoping to figure out how to make a reversible baby bonnet & make one in this fabric, in two colors. it can’t be THAT difficult, right? i’ve done more complicated stuff than a reversible bonnet, surely?

this month i made this skirt:

this second photo is great. you can see all the marks on the wall from where we lean the stroller against it, the bottle half-rolled under the couch…we installed a fancy coat hook in a different corner & we hang the stroller on that now (keeping it off the floor so ramona can’t pull it down on herself once she becomes more mobile), but i have yet to scrub those marks off the wall. & today was my early day with ramona, where i have to get up with her because jared teaches at 8am. so by the time jared & got home & took this photo, i was too beaten down by the events of the day to retrieve bottles from under the couch. even though it was only like 1pm.

jared & i also went on a babyproofing spree a week or two ago & we replaced our scary, rickety bookcase full of electrical cords & piles of zines with broken staples sticking out with a little storage bench with cloth bins for ramona’s toys. when she’s older, she’ll be able to get her toys out & perhaps even put them away herself! it came with a cushion upholstered in the worst fabric, so i made a new slipcover for it:

so yeah. lots of sewing. also on deck is another baby quilt for a baby due in december (but i’m waffling on that one because the fabric i cut for it is kind of girly but i don’t know the sex of the baby…so i might wait until it’s born before i jump in with both feet; this couple has an older daughter, so if the baby is a boy, maybe i’ll make the quilt for the girl as a special “older sister” present or something), finishing a quilt for ramona (i have the top done), another (non-baby) gift quilt, & a skirt for ericka.

but i’m also kind of desperate for a break from sewing. i miss reading! i have this immense stacks of library books & magazines on the side table. i read three books in august. THREE! before i had ramona, reading three books in a week was considered kind of a slow reading week. but that was also before i got really into sewing.

i have more to say but it’ll have to wait for another day. in the meantime, here are some cute bonus photos. most (all?) of this stuff has already been plastered all over my fabebook, but just in case anyone reads this who isn’t my friend there…or who missed one of my millionty-eight updates…

i bought all the fabrics yesterday! & since it’s a baby quilt, the piecing should go fast. it has an animal theme, but i kind of regret not going with a sea creature theme instead. but raccoons toasting marshmallows!
