hidden bookcase skirt! & other stuff

i made another skirt over the weekend!

it’s a contrast pleat skirt. i used that pink bookshelf fabric to make inverted box pleats. the main fabric is brown with little black dots, so it can be worn with black tops (pretty much the only color top i wear) without clashing. i really love the way it came out! the way the main skirt folds over the pleats when i’m standing still makes me think of hidden bookcases. then when i walk or sit, the pleat opens up & the bookcases are exposed.

i do have enough fabric to make another, if anyone is interested. all i need is waist & hip measurements & i can cut a pattern to fit. big or small, it doesn’t matter. you don’t need to, like, be in lawrence for me to measure you. i am charging $50 for a custom skirt & i can get it made & mailed within two weeks, probably. anyone want to take me up on this? the skirt is fully lined (so you don’t need a slip), with an invisible zipper along the left-hand side.

what else is going on in my life these days? well, i am obsessed with sewing. i’m already plotting the skirt i will be making for myself in august. in fact, i already ordered the fabric i will potentially be using. & i’m planning to make jared & i a quilt with all the leftover scrap fabric i’m accumulating once the weather turns cool again. we have a quilt that jared bought at some amish craft market in philly years ago, but it’s starting to fall apart.

i just love to sew! it’s like my favorite thing ever right now.

now that ramona is finished cutting her first tooth, she’s been easier to handle. mood-wise, i mean. she’s still a baby, & as such, a tiny bundle of terror. she recently started rolling over in her sleep. we have her crib sidecarred to our bed, meaning that her mattress perfectly abuts our own with no gap between them. we woke up this morning to find that she had rolled halfway into our bed & was snoozing while laying on her belly. it’s only a matter of time before she intentionally rolls/crawls into our bed & crowds us while we sleep, isn’t it? good thing jared sleeps on the crib side of the bed.

she is also able to sit on our shoulders. she has caught on to the idea of holding on & being safe. sunday was her seven-month birthday & we took her downtown to watch the “tour of lawrence” bike races. she sat on jared’s shoulders & had the time of her life. she especially loved watching the kid races. all these little kids on stride-a-bikes, or bikes with training wheels, or big wheels, or tricycles…it was too cute. of course there were a few spills & tears & kids who just didn’t understand the concept. one kid had a mishap in which one of his training wheels fell off. he was very upset. but most of the kids had fun, & it was hilarious to watch. it’s going to be bananas when ramona is old enough to participate in stuff like this.

we are also cat-sitting for the summer. one of jared’s professors has two cats, but she also has some kind of lake house or something. so we’re looking after the cats while she & her family spend the summer at the lake house. i’m happy to do it, with the hope that someday jared will be the kind of professor that has a motherfucking lake house. can you imagine?

the cats are named flint & jasper. they’re brothers & they are actually really good cats for people who have a baby. they are incredibly laid-back. they don’t necessarily like it when ramona grabs their fur & tries to stuff their tails in her mouth, but they don’t attack her. they just move away from her if she bugs them too much. they are also very good at chasing bugs, which is good, because it’s been unseasonably cool in kansas recently (by which i mean low 80s rather than low 100s, like it usually is this time of year), so we’ve had the doors open a lot. flint was chasing a moth last night & leapt from the top of my desk toward the wall, which only resulted in him falling down the gap between the wall & my desk. in his frantic attempts to save himself, he knocked EVERYTHING off the desk: a stack of library books, two notebooks, several pens & markers, my water bottle, the lamp, a few zines…when i stopped laughing, i rescued him. the cats also occasionally get jealous of the attention ramona gets while she’s being fed & they try to get in on the good times by laying down on top of her. she seems to love it, but it kind of annoys me.

next month, jared, ramona, & i are going on a family vacay to portland, oregon. we’ll be there for the portland zine symposium, although i am not planning to table. we’ll undoubtedly pop in & see what there is to see, but i’m not sure how much time we’ll be able to spend there with a baby in tow. i’m a little nervous about the whole thing. but i’m really looking forward to taking ramona to the beverly cleary statues in grant park!

I’m interested in taking you up on making 2 skirts for me (1 contrast pleat, 1 all typewriter fabric) but not within the next 2 weeks. Cat has to visit the vet, so I need $$ for that. I’m one of your Goodreads friends so I’ll get back to you. 🙂 -Jennifer W.-

i have the fabric to make the hidden bookcase contrast pleat fabric now. if i was going to make another typewriter skirt, i’d have to buy more fabric. which i could do…or you could just go for the bookcase skirt now & keep your eyes peeled for what i make next. my plan is to make one new design per month. i haven’t yet decided on august’s design, but there are several interesting fabrics i’m considering.

in any case, keep me posted! good luck with the vet!

update: i decided to open an etsy shop & make a few more skirts than i’d planned. you can check it out at ellafuntandramona.etsy.com, or you can just contact me directly if you decide you want a skirt or two once you get your vet situation sorted out. my email is learningtoleaveapapertrail@hotmail.com. thanks for the motivation!
